Advancing infant nutrition with 2-Fucosyllactose from goat milk

At CarbExplore, we are dedicated to advancing carbohydrate research and innovation. Our collaboration with a leading manufacturer of high-quality infant formula, alongside the University of Groningen, highlights this commitment. Together, we explored the carbohydrate profile of goat milk, uncovering its untapped potential.

The challenge

Our partner aimed to develop technology for producing goat milk products. To support this goal, we analyzed goat milk from various farms across the Netherlands, delving into the oligosaccharides present in both colostrum and mature milk. The research included method development, advanced statistical analysis, and correlating data with factors such as breed, diet, and milk production.

Groundbreaking discovery

Researchers identified 2-Fucosyllactose for the first time in goat milk. This key Human Milk Oligosaccharide (HMO) offers significant health benefits for infant nutrition. The compound was found in milk from specific goats. The discovery led to a patent application, with our team members as co-inventors, detailing a method for producing goat milk naturally containing 2-Fucosyllactose. These findings also supported the decision to establish a new production facility for infant nutrition in Heerenveen.

What it means for infant health

2-FucosylLactose is pivotal for supporting a baby’s immune system and gut health, offering benefits closer to those of human breast milk.

Why we’re proud

The success of this project underscores the importance of collaboration. Key achievements include:

  • Seamless collaboration supported by an open exchange of knowledge.

  • Significant scientific contributions, including three high-impact research and review publications.

  • A successful patent application,

These outcomes reflect the high quality of our work, from precise analysis of goat milk oligosaccharides to robust statistical evaluations of extensive datasets.

Driven by purpose

This project showcases the power of combining scientific expertise with strong collaboration. At CarbExplore, we are committed to advancing carbohydrate innovation and delivering solutions that support a healthier, more sustainable world.
